Abstract of Paper to be Presented at Accio 2008
Name, Claim, and Reframe: A Biblio-Dialogic Approach to the Understanding of Five Common Disability Stereotypes Using Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
Kathryne Shearer
The subtle issues of discrimination, hate, and bias are grounded in perpetuated stereotypes and their influence. Deconstructing such myths requires conversation, but these touchy subjects are difficult to discuss due to fear of offence, defensiveness, and misunderstanding. This program presents five disability stereotypes using the Harry Potter character as an amalgam for persons with disabilities. Using examples from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, the audience will interact with the stereotypes as they are identified and addressed in a workshop environment. For purposes of interaction, the DVD film version will be used rather than the book.
